Intro



I'm Matthew, I'm 24 years old, and I currently live in Scotland, however I'm willing to work just about anywhere around the world. I've spent my whole life programming and designing artefacts, from things as small as logos to as big as coding complete software.

I've just completed my final year of studying Digital Media BSc (Hons), graduating with a 2:1 classification, and having previously studied in Computer Science BSc earning a bachelor’s degree.

I first became fascinated with computers as a child, exploring software such as Google Earth or playing around with Excel and PowerPoint. Soon I went on to playing video games, and before I knew it I was teaching myself to take apart and build computers as a teenager. I progressed quickly in this area in high school while programming websites and basic programs in my free time.

I also enjoy hiking, climbing, and exploring the wild along with taking photographs along the way. Due to growing up on a farm, I took a keen interest in the environment from when I was very young, developing a fascination of the natural world from being a teenager to now.

Today, I see climate change as the foremost issue facing our planet, and it is for this reason among others that I would very much like to work one day as part of an organization that is devoted to protecting wildlife and our planet.

Applications of 3D Modelling in Protection of Settlements from Wildfires

(Project and dissertation completed to receive Honours classification of Digital Media degree from 2023-2024.)


Through this project I acquired a great deal of knowledge from studying wildfires, researching techniques of wildfire prevention, and more generally about the ways in which we can make our society more resilient to natural disasters. Due to using blender for fully modelling the town, the project also enriched my blender skills, while reinforcing my project management and development expertise.

Introduction

Over the past few years, wildfires have been getting increasing attention worldwide for how much more frequently they have been occurring, combined with their ever-growing scale. Due to climate change these catastrophic events are predicted to become even worse. And due to the highly unpredictable and destructive nature of wildfires combatting them is incredibly challenging. But one potential way we can attempt to limit their damage is through better planning of settlements and infrastructure. Yet there is a lack of research that has been taken into the settlement planning, such as 3D visualisations of plans with a focus on defence from wildfires, even though they are becoming increasingly prevalent and damaging. The aim of this project is to research the best practices of 3D digital representations of settlement planning in response to wildfire risk, and then implement them in a showcase model, that also highlights the various uncertainties associated.

Extinction Data Visualisation

This data visualization project was made to shine a light on extinct creatures, and how they're remembered to this day. This project taught me a great deal about Power BI, along with: data scraping, cleaning, and gave me valuable experience in data visualization on the whole, which I found particularly enjoyable.
